I breathe in deeply!
I Stretch to the Sun!
I share my Light with everyone!
I do my best,
everyday
To love, to laugh, to learn & to play!
I stand tall on the earth,
I stretch to the sun
I share my Light with everyone!

Namaste!!

How It Helps:

The "Sun Stretch" is a fun & easy adaptation of "Sun
Salutations". When done daily, it will help improve focus,
posture & balance; strengthen heart & lung functions;
increase confidence & uplift mood!

Sun Stretch Can be done anywhere, inside or outside &
can be done very slowly or more quickly, depending on
the skill level of your child.

The above poem helps children learn language skills
and remember sequencing.
*Remember to always use your Breath:

You can imagine:
Breathe in Red For Energy
Breathe in Blue For Calming
Did you know that many
Professional Athletes from many
sports use yoga for training &
conditioning?

means of influencing another, it is
the only means.” ~Albert Einstein

*General Suggestions for Yoga in The Classroom:

Yoga in The Classroom can be of great benefit to all students & staff!  Its best to set up a daily or weekly routine so the children know what to expect.

In a Yoga studio shoes are off at the door, you get your mat, find your space and sit or lie quietly waiting for class to begin. You can designate a time, area & routine for yoga much in
this same manner, using this same procedure as a template.

Yoga sessions should be of a length to suit the age/ability/attention span you are working with. In general, the younger the children, or for children with sensory/cognitive challenges,
the shorter the class.

For an elementary class 20- 30 minutes is good. For a Middle school child 30-50 minutes and High school an hour is fine for a formal practice. Teaching in a conventional classroom
may not allow this duration, so short 5- 15 minute intervals of movement & incorporation of various techniques such as storytelling, breathing & art & imagery can be used effectively
to release excess or nervous energy, re-focus, relax and reduce overall stress. Highly effective prior to test-taking!

Wild Things...
Allow Children to 'freestyle" in "Wild Thing" Poses :
Children can move their bodies as they are able as if they are Wild Things! (See more examples below) Let them
use their imaginations, using verbal & physical prompts, making suggestions & assisting as needed. Use exercise
balls, bolsters, small stools, blocks and other props if necessary. (Please supervise children at all times when using
exercise balls & props!)

Play the "Wild Things" Game:

(Auditory processing, Motor planning) Variation of "Freeze Dance") Play some music (varying tempos) and
encourage the children move around, show their claws & roar like Wild Things while the music is playing. Stop
the music, and instruct the children to stop when the music stops and "freeze" in place. When music starts, they
begin moving slowly around the room again, and when the music is stopped, they must freeze. You can
demonstrate & model this at first until they get the hang of it. To end the game, play some soft, lullabye type
music and put all the "Wild Things" to bed! (Resting on Floor or head down on desks.) See who can be the
quietest Wild Thing...

You can also adapt
"Red Light/Green Light" to be a Wild Thing Game. For Free Instructions, send request to:

Tree Pose Benefits:

•Strengthens thighs, calves, ankles, and spine
•Stretches the hips, inner thighs, chest and shoulders
•Improves balance
•Strengthens lower back and corrects flat feet

Tree pose can be done from a wheel chair or seated on a cushion.  Use a
block or low stool to support raised foot until muscles will hold it off the
floor independently. (Just raise arms up as 'branches' and wiggle fingers as
blowing 'leaves'.)

Most children take naturally to yoga, It can be adapted to any age or ability, making it very accessible to any child who wants to try
it. Whether an artist or an athlete, an "A" student or challenged, no special skills or equipment is needed, and all will benefit.

By moving & making noises like animals, (or mountains, stars, trees & other natural objects), common poses come alive! Children can
better understand their own outer & inner nature by imitation.  In addition, they are  moving & growing,  building healthy bodies and
having an experience of naturally integrated senses.

Yoga can be used to release frustrated pent-up energy, to calm and relax in the classroom (before a test) at home (before
bedtime) or anytime & anywhere the need arises. It helps build physical strength, character and confidence & can be done indoors or
outside. No special equipment is needed.

Ou
r "Pose & Posture Page is a feature to acquaint you with some of the things we learn in a typical play group or class. You can print
this page & try these at home with your child or in the classroom with your students. Remember that yoga is called a "
practice"... it
is not called  a
"perfect"  &  it does not have to be! Just watch children have fun exploring & remind yourself to do the same!

Love & Laughter!
