| More About the Founder and the History of S.M.Art Kids®: Barbara Gini, CMBT, RCYT , began working with children with adaptive needs in 1979. At age 14, Barbara's first employment was working for the Commission for the Blind & Visually Impaired, reading and typing tests and assignments for her blind peers. She also volunteered with a Psychomotor Patterning program in her high school, for a fellow student with spina biffida, and another in a community church, with an infant & a toddler, both with downs syndrome. During that time, she felt drawn to understand how the body & brain work, what causes these conditions & deficiencies and why others avoid, tease & further alienate these remarkable people. She read from magazines & encyclopedias everything she could find about human anatomy, physiology, biology, neurology, sociology, psychology & pathology. After studying Exercise Physiology at Hahnemann University (Philadelphia, PA) & working in the allied health profession, she couldn't help but feel like there was so much more to learn & something more that could be done with her life. As Barbara raised her 2 sons over the next 13 years, she would find herself learning & working in various capacities in health, fitness & education, until in 1998 she began working in an early intervention program as an autism support/ABA paraprofessional. It was here that Barbara found her passion & began to put all the pieces together. She began to visualize an enrichment program that was fun, therapeutic and encouraged positive social interaction among her students, their families & others. In 1999, after Barbara's daughter was born, she continued to work in the field & at the same time earned a variety of certifications, among them being Mind/Body Fitness, sport yoga, exercise physiology, children's yoga, holistic nutrition, Brain Gym, stress management, aromatherapy & reflexology. It was finally in 2001 Barbara launched BodyLogique ® & began offering yoga fitness & cultural dance classes for women & children in the south Jersey area. In 2008 after moving to Pennsylvania, Barbara re-defined the company's mission and began to restructure the programs to be even more inclusive of children with adaptive needs by furthering her education and working closely with educators, OT's , therapists & other professionals. In 2009, along with former business partner, Robin Schwoyer, S.M.Art Kids Yoga was conceptualized & used to establish the Happy HeArts Yoga program that Robin now solely directs & operates along with the HeArts for Autism program. S.M.Art Kids Adaptive Yoga® was registered as a trademark by Barbara in 2009. Barbara has a unique way of connecting with children of all ages, especially those who were considered 'different', through interactive creative games and storytelling. She has been successful in engaging, guiding and teaching children through moving & creative play that empowers them to be more confident & learn valuable Social & Life skills at the same time they explore their bodies, ideas, situations, thoughts and environment. Barbara works closely with OT's, PT's, paraprofessionals, educators, parents & others to ensure that her enrichment programs are not only fun, but complimentary to traditional therapies as well. Barbara has 3 children; 2 sons now ages 26 & 27 & a daughter age 12. In her spare time, she volunteers at various schools & community events throughout PA & NJ. Her 11 year old daughter has been a trained peer mentor since age 8 & often accompanies her to events & classes. They reside in Upper Bucks County PA. Over the years, Barbara has partnered & volunteered with many schools and organizations to bring creative fitness & other enrichment programs to the community. She is dedicated to working with children & adults, athletic coaches & educators, encouraging non-competitive, whole person learning through movement arts, visual arts, and story arts, with an emphasis on the special needs community. |
